From the Ayurvedic perspective, some body types need more sweet tasting food than others. The sweet taste is one of the necessary six tastes (sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent), but the problem comes when we consume these tastes in a ratio that is misaligned with what our specific body type needs.
Consuming large amounts of sugar has been implicated in a host of serious health conditions, including metabolic syndrome and obesity, but also in inflammatory conditions. It affects all systems of the body.
Sugar contains the water and earth elements. It helps us build and lubricate our tissues, but in excess, it makes our blood and bodily fluids stickier. So if we consume too much of it, this excess stickiness can clog channels, impede flow, starve certain areas of nutrients, and even lead to inflammatory responses.
One body type is more likely to already have a lot of the water and earth elements, so this body type doesn't need as much sugar as the others. (And it has nothing to do with weight!)
But actually, because sugar can be quite addictive, it's really easy for people with ANY of the body types to go too far with it.
Luckily, there is an herbal medicine from the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia that is used to combat excess sugar in the blood, and as an added bonus, it impairs one's ability to TASTE sugar by blocking the sweet-tasting receptors on the surface of the tongue!
Use of this herb in studies has shown that it reduces glucose levels and certain types of cholesterol.
